Step 2.1: Set Goals

If you know what your land can support and what you need from it, you’re halfway there! Write down statements about the outcomes you’d like to see. If you have a goal statement, you can develop objectives and begin identifying possible methods and the resources required to complete your project.

For example:

  • I want to remove cheatgrass and replace it with Idaho fescue and bluebunch wheatgrass.

  • I want to protect my old oak trees from burning in a wildfire.

  • I want to harvest Douglas-fir and send it to the mill without damaging soils in the understory.

A large oak tree with orange and yellow autumn leaves stands alone in a dry, grassy field under a cloudy sky, with a row of evergreen trees in the background.
