Oak Observations May 2025

Pink velvety growths on oak leaves from eriophyid mites

Pink Velvet Oak Leaves?!

One benefit of partnership is being able to phone a friend when you have a question! Recently, an ECOP partner reached out to share an observation of a mysterious growth on a resprouting oak near Mosier, OR.

Eriophyid Mites

The velvety pink growth on this oak foliage may look like a fashion statement, but it is actually a reaction to a mite! Eriophyid mites are more often found on maples in our area, so it was a fun surprise to find them on an oak. The microscopic mites feed on plant tissues which can induce the oak to respond by creating these velvety patches on leaves. Generally, these are merely a cosmetic issue and do not result in damage to the tree’s long-term health.

Thanks to everyone who helped us learn more about what was affecting this oak and for participating in a culture of learning together. It is one of the many things that makes this partnership so strong.
